7:00 a.m. Camp Report

The sun is now creeping upwards towards the mountain horizon here and I just completed a driving tour of the Sawmill Gulch fire--something I have not had time to do until about this time yesterday morning.  I have forwarded to Steph for posting a visual report of that foray, the results of which were, frankly, somewhat surprising.

We had been told that the fire coming down towards the Creek downstream from us at Sawmill Gulch had been ahead of the fire that greeted us from upstream Bear Gulch--lucky us being exactly equidistant from both.  Well, as the attached photo of smoke filled Sawmill Gulch shows, that information was incorrect, as, the fire is still well up into Sawmill Gulch resulting in the now accurate fact that Extravaganza Headquarters had, indeed, been located in the proverbial ground zero of the Sawmill Gulch fire, with fire hitting creek side right behind our house first, making us, not our downstream neighbor the dubious winner in the "Great Race to the Creek", by, in fact, losing.

I have also attached photos of the deer-guarded spike camp just up the road from us a quarter mile at Norton Campground as well as photos taken from behind the Ranch on Ranch Creek (where each of our four Extravaganza groups stayed) showing that, yes, last night's fireworks had effectively resulted in a burn of most of the fuel down to the Creek behind this house now, as well as ours--great (truly great) news.

Interestingly, not a single person was to be seen on my tour, creating an interesting contrast to the activity and personnel that occupied the Creek yesterday afternoon and yet reaffirming the wisdom in our decision to "ride it out".

I wonder just what song Simon and Garfunkle would make out of all this!
